They shouldn t be relying on their mother to this time. Milk production should stop within 2 weeks but it can vary. Allow them to eat the gruel for about 15 20 minutes and then return them to mom. They should be stopped even if it comforts them.

The weaning process usually continues for about another month until the kittens are fully weaned between eight and 10 weeks of age. The vast majority of mother cats will know when it s time to wean the kittens. Towards the end of the run however kittens should be receiving the vast majority of their dietary intake via food that is made specifically for kittens.
Although it s safe to remove the kittens from the mother at 4 8 weeks old i would leave it up to the mommy kitty. Usually the mother weens the kittens completely by 8 or 9 weeks old. A mother cat would normally stop feeding their kittens around 6 8 weeks after giving birth to them the mother cat would stop feeding them and start to push them off because they grow teeth and. Mom will likely appreciate this break by this time anyway.
